Lessons on Writing

The Ninja’s Sword

When I was a teacher, I encouraged my students to improve their writing by acting out what they were writing.

If a ninja swings a sword, what does it sound like? I once asked a student.

He still struggled with finding the right words.

We then pretended to be ninjas. He used different sound effects while pretending to swing a sword.

After acting it out, he wrote down, “The sword sliced the air like a sizzle of bacon on a frying pan.”

This was one of those moments when I felt like I won the lottery when I was a teacher.
